New Hire to a University – The Beginning of Susan’s Applicant Story

You’ve probably been in Susan’s circumstance at some point in your career. You’re starting a new job, and it has something to do with grants but don’t know exactly what that means. Now you need to quickly learn about federals grants so that you can get one and manage it.

How Can Susan Learn about Grants?

The first step is to read the What Is a Grant? post to understand the basics. Knowing what a grant is helps, but you will quickly realize there is a long, complex process that spans from searching and applying for a grant to sending in your final progress report several years later.

With these two posts under your belt, it is likely you have a lot more questions. That’s where the Grants Learning Center on Grants.gov comes in. The information there covers the basics of the grants lifecycle, management, policy, funding agencies, and more.

More Advanced Training

The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Uniform Administrative Requirements, Cost Principles, and Audit Requirements for Federal Awards (whew – what a mouthful!) may initially sound like another language, but if you want to work in federal grants you will need to familiarize yourself with this guidance.

There are lots of details and nuances to the federal grants lifecycle. Fortunately, OMB has published free online grants management training modules that get into the finer details of the process.
